BRYCE HOSPITAL
The University of Alabama purchased Bryce Hospital from the Alabama Department of Mental Health on May 27, 2010. Bryce Hospital was the last large tract adjoining the University’s campus and the logical choice for expansion if it could be acquired. Previously, 21 acres of hospital land north of the Student Recreation Center was purchased (December, 2007) to expand parking in the northeast quadrant of the campus.
The area of the Bryce Hospital campus which was acquired by the University is considered to be the land located “inside the fence” and contains 168 acres. An exception and exclusion was the cemetery located on the northeast edge of the property which remains the Department of Mental Health’s property.
